A Mission in Our Own Home Town, 1891

East Lynn Christian Church, Anderson

East Lynn Christian Church was established as a mission by the Central Christian Church of Anderson on December 13, 1891. Initially, the new congregation met at the corner of East Lynn and 28th Streets. To provide a better location, the building was moved in 1900 to the corner of 22nd and George Streets.

In 1915 a new brick building was constructed at the corner of 23rd and Jefferson Streets. The church was located across the street from General Motors, and the congregation provided spiritual nurture for many plant workers and their families.

In the 1970s and 1980s, General Motors downsized, cutting the employee rolls by 60 percent. Many church families moved away. The children and grandchildren of those who remained went away to college but did not return to Anderson. Factories in the community were torn down and the neighborhood became increasingly transient.

The congregation moved to its current location at the corner of 53rd Street and Southern Avenue in 1994. Within the first four years in this location, the congregation added 59 new members.

Rev. Susan Cameron currently serves the church as pastor.
